Brow Wax Aftercare: What to Do in the First 48 Hours
By Urban Hue and Tattoo | August 6, 2026
If you just had a 10-minute Brow Wax with our team in Sioux Falls, this is the one rule that protects your skin fast: keep the brow area cool, clean, and hands-off for the first 48 hours. Heat, sweat, and makeup are usually what turn a calm wax into bumps and irritation. The good news is aftercare is low-effort, and you can get right back to your day with a few smart choices.
Quick reset: Cool compress for a few minutes, skip makeup for 24 hours, and avoid steam and heavy sweating for 24 to 48 hours.
Your first 24 to 48 hours: the do’s and don’ts that prevent bumps
Right after waxing, your skin is a little more exposed than usual. Think of it like your brows are "fresh" and need a calm environment for a day or two. In Sioux Falls summers, heat and humidity can sneak up on you, so we generally recommend treating the first 48 hours like a cool-down window.
Do this today
- Use a cool compress for a few minutes if you’re red or tender.
- Cleanse gently with a mild, non-scrubby cleanser. No washcloth scrubbing over the brow area.
- Apply a fragrance-free soothing gel (aloe is a solid option) if your skin feels tight.
Skip this for 24 to 48 hours
- Hot showers, steam rooms, saunas, and leaning over a steaming sink.
- Heavy exercise and sweating (more on workouts below).
- Swimming, lakes, and hot tubs. Chlorine and bacteria are not your brow’s best friend right now.
- Touching, rubbing, or "checking" them in the mirror every five minutes. We get it, but don’t.
And one more: hold off on eye makeup, brow pencil, brow gel, and anything that sits directly on that skin for at least 24 hours. If you need to look polished, keep makeup below the brow and avoid blending up into the waxed area.
The first week after a brow wax: keep the shape crisp, not cranky
Most people calm down quickly, but the first week is where little habits matter. If you’re outside a lot, Sioux Falls sun plus fresh waxed skin can equal irritation. Keep that area protected and avoid anything that acts like sandpaper or acid.
What we want you to avoid
- Exfoliants and retinoids around the brow for 48 to 72 hours. That includes acids, scrubs, and acne products that migrate upward.
- Picking at dry spots or tiny bumps. If you can feel it, you’ll want to fix it. Don’t.
- Oil-heavy products right away, especially if you’re prone to congestion. Keep it light.
What’s normal, and what’s not
Mild redness or sensitivity can last a few hours and sometimes up to 48 hours. A little warmth is common on day one. Swelling or blistering is uncommon. If you notice blistering, spreading redness, or increasing tenderness that doesn’t settle down, reach out to us and also check in with a medical professional right away.
Easy product picks: cleanser, aloe gel, and what to keep off your brows
After a Brow Wax, simple wins. You don’t need a drawer full of products. You need a couple things that calm skin and don’t clog it.
Our go-to routine for most people: gentle cleanse, pat dry, then a thin layer of fragrance-free soothing gel (aloe works well). If you’re dry, add a light, non-fragranced moisturizer around the area, not rubbed aggressively into it.
What we generally recommend skipping right away
- Heavily fragranced skincare around the brows.
- Thick oils and balms directly over freshly waxed skin, at least for the first day.
- Any brow tinting or extra services for at least 24 hours, so the skin can settle first.
If you’re stocking up near Marion Road and 57th Street South, keep it boring in the best way. Calm, fragrance-free, and gentle beats "strong" every time during the first couple days.
Real-life timing: washing your face, workouts, makeup, and rebooking
We keep Brow Wax appointments quick for a reason. You can pop in easily off I-229 and Marion Road, then get back to real life. Here are the timing questions we hear the most from Sioux Falls, Brandon, Tea, Hartford, Harrisburg, and Crooks.
Washing your face
You can usually wash your face the same day, but keep water lukewarm and go gentle around the brows. Pat dry. No scrubs, no hot water, no aggressive rubbing.
Workouts and sweat
We generally recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before heavy exercise. Sweat and friction can irritate freshly waxed skin. If you have to move your body, keep it light and wipe sweat away carefully, not by rubbing the brow area.
Makeup timing
Avoid brow products and eye makeup for at least 24 hours. After that, make sure your tools are clean and don’t press hard into the skin. If you’re still red, give it another day.
When to come back
Most people rebook brows around every 4 to 6 weeks. Try not to tweeze daily between visits. A few "cleanup" hairs is fine, but constant tweezing tends to blur the shape we built.
If you’re also exploring other hair removal options, take a look at our waxing services in South Sioux Falls. It’s a helpful overview if you’re thinking about adding lip, chin, or other wax services alongside your brows.
When to reach out to Urban Hue and Tattoo (and when to get medical help)
We’re big on talking things through and keeping you comfortable. That’s part of how we work across our services, and it matters with brows too. If something feels off after your wax, don’t sit and stress.
Reach out to us if you notice
- Redness that hangs on longer than expected and isn’t improving.
- Small bumps that keep getting worse instead of calming down.
- You have questions about products you use near your brows and want a quick yes or no.
Important: If you have blistering, spreading redness, or swelling that concerns you, contact us and also reach out to a medical professional right away. That’s not the "wait it out" kind of situation.
When you’re ready for your next brow cleanup, we’ll keep it quick and precise. Our Brow Wax is $15, and it’s easy to swing by our spot in the Marion Road area near 57th Street South.
